Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.

…likely to add a pin to her beautiful world travel map!

World Travel MapSoft, warm, and mysterious, like the vanquished heat at the end of the desert day, toward dusk. I will customize the title, if you wish. It comes mounted on foam board and ready for framing. I thought a steel gray or black frame would work nicely!

Note Casablanca is on this detail… !

Yes! In case you wondered, it is the perfect Mother’s Day gift! Mothers travel, too!

The colors are subtle and blend with many decors.

My hope is that these designs evoke memories and dreams. They certainly have for me!

Send me concept ideas! I’d love to hear what people think!

Try ruling the world, sometime…

PrintWe are moving into one of the seasons of travel. I’ve tasked myself to design some very unique world maps to highlight travels. Yes, unique is one, but they have to be nice, too!

Many of you who are familiar with design may agree with me when I say our creations are like babies. No one design stands higher than the other. Although, there are a few prodigies that shine the way for the rest, I’m thinking.

My Skyline map uses a soft color palette set on a composite of over twenty of our world’s most familiar city skylines. With a mix of passport stamps above, this map expresses beauty and evokes excitement for the open road. This comes mounted on foam board, and includes pushpins to mark your travels!

pushpinsample3Next is a map that is quickly becoming a “classic.” This is a world map in bold yellow, gold, and deep blues. This design is my first posted and has gotten the most interest, over the past three years or so.

I wanted to create something that would be truly eye catching, using saturation and contrasting colors. The effect is stunning!

This, too, has a good number of cities located, is mounted on foam board, and includes pushpins for locating places you’ve been, a loved one has seen, or want to go in the future!

Although there are many more maps to show you, I’ve got to stop myself… One more!

CoastlineDetailThis is not a pushpin map, but a beautiful wall map showing physical features, ocean features, as well as major cities. The colors that are warm and subtle, to blend with neutral settings.

It’s a bit larger than many of my others. It is also a more rectangular projection, rather than my more traditional oval. I had brought a lot of focus on type placement on this design. Labels were carefully placed and given an “organic” feel.

Sometimes pictures can say more than words. Wedding season and graduation is coming up! Consider maps as a lifetime gift for your world explorer!

I will be hosting this event for another three days.  All the maps I produce now are made from scratch using public domain data, converted and laid out to create clean and readable information in an aesthetic setting. My mission is to foster interest in printed maps for people of all ages by building beautifully designed and geographically accurate designs.  They are educational!  Frankly, I’ve got a huge backlog of map ideas.  I wish there was more time in the week!

Among my projects I have pulled most of my recent artistic endeavors together to create a united effort to share some of my favorite designs/art.  I’ve had an Etsy store for some time, but have let it lapse, until now.  So I’ve decided to call my latest drive my “Grand Opening!”

Turning Cartography to “Artography”

Here's the full Paris layout.

Here’s the full Paris layout.

There is no such word as Artography, but the hope of Madison, Wisconsin artist/cartographer (mapper) Doug Crews-Nelson is to make an impact in the world of art with his special angle on map design.About Doug Crews-Nelson
Doug’s background begins out of college, where he created maps using pen and ink, over twenty years ago. From there, he worked for a local mapping company, scribing elements for composite to films for press plates. There he began developing his computer cartography skills. He became a business partner at Magellan Mapping Company. There his repertoire grew to include graphic design. He experimented with fine art design on his computer using top of line graphic design programs, and getting an education on print substrates. As print cartographers are being squeezed out of the market by online mapping services, Doug has been happy to turn his focus toward reacquainting people with a love of the printed map, combining accurate information, in a clean and effective way, coupled with elegant design and element. And that’s the twist, these maps can be used as a geographic resource as well as stand alone art.As a commission artist, Doug works with the media he is most familiar with; paper, adhesive fabrics, clear acrylic, bio-materials, certain woods, ceramic tiles, and so on. Projects range from household, office, and public spaces. Products are wide and creative, including; framed compositions, murals, and laser/router cut printed elements.
